Dark grey/green slightly rough culms partly obscured by retained lower culm leaves and very large leaves identify this attractive species. Young shoots are dark green but covered in black hairs. Strong and durable, it is the most used species in Java for roof rafters. The young culms up to 3cm wall thickness are split into thin strong weaving flats for making "Tomplok" carrying baskets split into grass roof lashing and made into rope and cord. The bitter young shoots are buried in mud for four days before cooking and eating. Highly recommended.
